OpenAI's first hardware product is a knob. You turn it to make your coding agent think harder, and turn it back when the task is small. It costs 230 dollars, it sits beside the keyboard you already own, and the chassis underneath it is a Work Louder macro pad that ships in a plain box, with no Codex branding, for 174.
This is a story about a macro pad. It is also a story about what agentic coding is quietly doing to the shape of your desk, which is the part worth your attention.
What actually launched
On July 15, OpenAI's Supply Co. released the kbd-1.0-codex-micro, built with keyboard maker Work Louder under a new line called Co-Lab. OpenAI calls it "your command center for agentic work." It is a small square pad with 13 mechanical switches, a touch sensor, a rotary encoder, and a planar joystick. It is a limited run, available until stock is gone.
OpenAI told TechCrunch the device is a limited-run collaboration, which is a polite way of saying it is merch with firmware. The company was careful to separate it from the screenless companion device Bloomberg reported this week, and from the Jony Ive project the CFO says arrives by year end. The timing is its own comedy: Apple sued OpenAI last week alleging a deliberate strategy to extract confidential hardware information, and OpenAI has denied wrongdoing. The company's first answer to "are you a hardware company" turned out to be a keypad.
The premise is not nothing. Codex and ChatGPT Work have reached 8 million active users, according to Codex engineering lead Thibault Sottiaux, and Codex was folded into the ChatGPT desktop app last week. The pitch assumes you are running enough agents at once that you cannot remember which one is on fire. Sit with that for a second: the promise of agentic coding was that you would do less, and the accessory market's first read on that promise is that you need a dashboard.

That table is not a hostile reading. It is two spec sheets side by side. The tell is on OpenAI's own product page, under a heading called Included, where the first item listed is: Creator Micro. OpenAI is telling you what is in the box, and what is in the box is a Work Louder Creator Micro with different hats on.
The three controls, and which one matters
Agent Keys. Each one carries a live RGB status pushed from Codex, so you can see what is thinking, running, waiting, or done without switching chats. This is the headline feature, and it is a status LED. It is a good status LED. It is also the thing your terminal has been doing with a spinner since roughly 1983, relocated to a separate object on your desk that you have to look at with your eyes.

Command Keys. Dedicated physical shortcuts for accept, reject, push-to-talk, and starting a new chat. Read that list again slowly. You automated the writing of the code. You did not automate the approving of the code. The 230 dollar device exists because a human still has to sit there and press yes, and OpenAI has decided that human deserves a nicer yes.
The dial. This is the interesting one, and it is not a joke. Turning it adjusts the agent's reasoning level in the moment: fast for simple tasks, heavier when the work calls for it. Reasoning effort has lived inside config files, request bodies, and model picker dropdowns. OpenAI took a parameter that maps almost directly onto how much compute you are about to spend and made it a thing you reach out and touch.
The joystick. Flicking it launches common Codex workflows: reviewing a pull request, debugging an error, refactoring. It drives Work Louder's Input app, which OpenAI lists in the software specs alongside Codex itself. Work Louder documents that the radial menu requires the Input process running in the background, and that killing it drops the menu while leaving key actions working. Your tactile hardware shortcut has a daemon.
One more spec, offered without comment: the switches are rated for 50 million keystrokes. That is the durability number on a device sold to people whose entire pitch is that they have stopped typing.
The verdict you came for
Do you need it: no. OpenAI's own copy says the pad maps "your most-used Codex actions" to tactile controls. Map is the operative verb. Every action on this device is an action Codex already exposes, which means the pad does not add capability, it adds proximity. If your bottleneck is that a key combination lives too far from your fingers, you have solved every other problem you have.
Is it worth 230: depends what you think you are paying for. As a tool, you are paying a 56 dollar premium over the same chassis for keycaps, firmware, and a status integration. As merch, 230 is a conference hoodie plus a mechanical keyboard, and merch has never been evaluated on need. Both readings are correct. The mistake is doing the second thing while telling yourself it is the first.
For what it is worth, OpenAI is in on the joke. The launch post from the developer account tells people to grab one before stock returns a 410, which is the HTTP status for Gone. You do not write that line about a product you are pitching as essential infrastructure.
What to take from this

Insight 1: Steal the dial, skip the hardware. Exposing reasoning effort as a first-class, in-the-moment user control is a software idea wearing a hardware costume. If you ship an agent product, the question this device asks is worth asking in your own UI: does the user get to decide how hard the model thinks on this specific task, or have you hidden that behind a model picker?

Insight 2: The accept button is the real product roadmap. A physical key for approving agent actions is an admission that human review is the bottleneck and is going to stay the bottleneck. Every agent product is converging on the same unsolved problem: how does one person supervise five running processes without reading all five diffs. Nobody owns that surface, and it is worth more than the pad.

Insight 3: Merch is a moat with a low bill of materials. Work Louder has run this playbook for Figma already. A developer with a Codex pad on their desk is in the Codex ecosystem in a way that has nothing to do with benchmark scores, and switching costs built out of identity are cheaper to manufacture than switching costs built out of model quality.

The keycaps will end up in a drawer. The dial will not: somebody at OpenAI decided that how hard a model thinks should be something a human can reach out and turn, and that decision is going to outlive the object it arrived on.
